McLaren teases its 650S successor

THE NEXT-GENERATION MCLAREN SUPERCAR IS COMING TO GENEVA

McLaren plans to unveil its second-generation Super Series supercar at the Geneva motor show on March 7. The upcoming replacement for the company’s capable 650S supercar is said to have a staggering 50 percent more downforce than the outgoing model, thanks in part to a full-length rear wing and active aero tricks.Naturally, the rear wing will be active, increasing and decreasing drag as the driving situations change, as well as acting as an air brake when necessary. McLaren’s dihedral door, also known as a billionaire door in some circles, is getting massaged to help better cool the engine. By reworking the doors, McLaren claims to net a 15 percent more efficient cooling system.

While it might seem strange that changes to the driver and passenger door will affect cooling, McLaren supercars have rear-mounted radiators that are fed by scoops behind the doors.

We imagine the next-gen Super Series will also get a healthy dose of added power to make use of its newfound grip, but we can’t say for certain how much until McLaren rips the covers off at Geneva. That isn’t to say the 650S is any sort of slouch — its mid-mounted 641-hp turbocharged 3.8-liter V8 can push the thing over 200 mph.
