Automobili Lamborghini SpA unveiled its 2013 Gallardo LP 570-4 Super Trofeo, a racing car designed for the company’s Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo, a one-make racing series aimed at giving customers a way to get into motorsport while raising the company’s profile.
The Italian exotic-car builder, a unit of German auto giant Volkswagen, started the Super Trofeo series in part as a response to rival Ferrari’s long-running Challenge series in which wealthy buyers compete in race-prepared version s of the company’s street cars.
The races, which often serve as preview events for major professional racing contests, have become popular with racing cans and customers. Stephan Winkelmann, Lamborghini’s president and chief executive, said he plans to expand the racing series beyond its current events in Europe and Asia. Possible new markets include the U.S.
Lamborghini said its latest Gallardo is based on the chassis and mechanical setup of lat year’s model, but has many aerodynamic improvements including reshaped body panels and adjustable aerodynamic features including a rear wing that can be set among 10 positions. The car maker said aerodynamic modifications also improve brake cooling and the cars overall handling balance.
In total the new car represents a 120% improvement in aerodynamics compared with the 2012 Gallardo, Lamborghini said.
